| הרב מסביר כאן את הצד החיובי של אותה דרישה מתפרצת – את הצד ההכרחי של תחושת קרבת אלוהים שהיא התוך של קיום המצוות – שהן ההכנות הדרושות ליישר לה את דרכה. | עבודה רוחנית גדולה היא לאדם, שיפתח כל כך את עצמו עד שיכיר את קרבת אלוהים אליו בפנימיותו. כל סדרי החיים הם מתישרים, כשנטיה זו הכוללת היא מתעוררת יפה. לשם צורך זה, אין הפרש באיזה אופן יבואו לידו ההרגשות על דבר קרבת אלוהים, אם יבואו בדרך שכל והכרה הגיונית, או בדרך הרגשה פנימית, ובלבד שיכיר בתוכיותו את עצמה ואמתתה. המצוות כולן והתפילות, הן המכשירים היותר טובים, להרחיב את הנטיה של קרבת אלהים, ולהרחיב את צעדיה במעמקי הנפש. על כן גדול ורם הוא מאוד ערך כל תפילה בכונה, כל ברכה ותהילה, כל מצוה וכל מנהג טוב, שהם הם הנם האמצעיים ליסד את הרגשת קרבת אלוהים בלבו של אדם בדרך יסוד מוסד. אומללים הם האנשים אשר לא ידעו את ה', אשר לא יתפללו ולא יעשו את המצוות עם כל קהל עדת ישראל. ההכשר שבנשמה לתביעת קרבת אלוהים מבקש גם מהם את תפקידו, והם באשר אינם ממלאים את חובתם לנפש, נשארים הם על ידי זה אומללים, יבשים מכל טל טוהר. ואף אם ירטיבו מעשים טובים, למלאות את צמאון המוסר הטבעי שבתכונתם, לא יוכל צורך זה להספיק את החסר מצד הצורך של תביעת קרבת אלוהים, שאיננה מתמלאת כי אם במעשים אלוהיים, מיוחדים לשם ה', בשיחת קודש, ומעשה מצוה ופקודי ה'. מתוך החמלה שעלינו לחמול על כללות האדם, וביחוד על בנינו והקרובים לנו בגזע ורוח, הננו מתעוררים לישר לפניהם את הדרך הישרה של קרבת אלוהים, שהיא נקנית על ידי התורה בתלמודה וקיומה. וכל מה שתעלה בידנו יותר מטרה נעלה זו, כל מה שיתרבו המעשים הטובים והטהורים, המביאים בטעם להשרשת קרבת אלוהים בכח החיים, כן יגדל האושר בעולם. |
זהו המעגל הגדול של המעשים הנובעים מתוך תחושת קרבת אלוהים ותחושת קרבת אלוהים ההולכת ומעמקת את המעשים וזריזות עשייתם. כמאמר הסעיף הראשון בשולחן ערוך: "שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד הוא כלל גדול בתורה ובמעלות הצדיקים אשר הולכים לפני האלהים" – כמבוא לכל המעשים – וכאן הרב מסביר כיצד גם ההיפך הוא הנכון – כיצד הדבקות במעשים – הולכת ומעמקת את התודעה הפנימית של קרבת אלוהים. |

| It is a great spiritual labor for man to develop himself to such an extent that he recognizes God’s proximity to him inside himself. When this general tendency is well kindled, all of life’s ways are straightened. To this end, it matters not how a man attains these feelings of God’s proximity, whether through intellect and logical realization, or through an inner feeling, so long as he realizes its existence and truth within himself. All of the commandments and prayers are the best tools for expanding the tendency to grow closer to God, and widen its influence within the depths of the soul. For this reason, the value of every prayer said with full intent, every blessing and veneration, every commandment kept and every good custom maintained is very great and exalted, for these are the very means for establishing the sense of God’s proximity in man’s heart in an orderly way. Miserable indeed are the people who do not know Hashem , who have not prayed and not carried out the commandments with the entire congregation of Israel’s community. The spirit’s readiness for the call to God’s proximity demands its role from them as well, and as they fail to fulfill their duty to their soul they thus remain miserable, arid and bereft of the dew of purity. And even should some good deeds provide some moisture, slaking some of the thirst arising from the natural morality in their constitution, this need cannot provide for the lack arising from the aspect of the need of the call for God’s proximity, which can only be fulfilled with Godly deeds, with actions dedicated in Hashem’s name, sacred discourse, endeavors carried out by God’ behest and command. Out of the compassion that we must feel for all of mankind, especially our sons and those who are close to us in race and spirit, we arise so level the straight path of God’s proximity before them, the path that is acquired through the study and observance of the Torah. And the more we succeed in this grand mission and the greater the proliferation of those good and pure deeds, which by their very nature allow God’s proximity to take root in life’s force, so happiness shall increase in the world. |
